CO is a poisonous gas that is odourless, colourless and tasteless. It kills around 50 and seriously injures nearly 200 people in the UK every year. It is released when a carbon-containing fuel such as gas, oil, coal, coke, petrol or wood doesn’t burn fully because there is not enough air available. Incorrectly installed, poorly maintained or poorly ventilated room or water heaters, fires or cookers are the main sources. For healthy adults CO becomes toxic when it reaches a level higher than 50 ppm (parts per million) with continuous exposure over an 8 hour period. At higher levels a person will suffer symptoms of exposure. Mild exposure over a few hours (70-100 ppm) include flu-like symptoms such as headaches, sore eyes and a runny nose. Higher exposure (150-300 ppm) will produce dizziness, drowsiness and vomiting. Extreme exposure (over 400 ppm) will result in unconsciousness, precipitating brain damage and possible death within a few hours.
